New technologies are impacting the way people listen to the radio. Mp3s and internet radio are the main sources that have impacted the way people listen to the radio. These two technologies have put the listen of exatly what you want to hear at your finger tips.
Thanks to the innovation of Mp3s people can take almost anything they want to listen to and convert it into a Mp3 file. After converting it to a mp3 they can then download it onto their Mp3 player and take it anywhere. With mp3 players people can put a days worth of music, or whatever they want to listen to, onto their mp3 player and avoid annoying commerical and djs talking.
Internet radio has also changed the way people listen to the radio. The internet opens the listener up to thousands of different radio stations. The listener doesn't have to listen to the five stations their radio gets; all basicly the same with only a little varioation. This person can now go onto the internet and choose from stations all around the world. Giving this person exactly what they want to listen to.
The internet radio station that I chose was http://www.pandora.com/#/stations/create/. The reason why I chose this station is that I use this radio station almost everyday. About every 20-25 minutes they play a 30 second commercial. This radio station is exactly what I want to hear, I chose the bands that I want to be played. If I don't like the song that is playing I can click thumbs down and I will never hear the song again; if I'm not in the mood for the song I can click next. The down fall to skipping songs is that i only get to skip 5-7 songs and hour.
A new trade to add to the old one

Interesting point. Think about the entertainment aspect of it as well. Prior to 10 years ago, options were limited and people often chose two major forms of popular media: radio and television.
ReplyDeletePeople want everything right now. Traditional radio is not an "on demand" option. Today, cars are installing MP3 players standard with SIRIUS radio. Cable companies offer movies that are "on demand" and TV programing can be recorded, paused, rewound. Internet services are faster and with the integration of email, internet surfers are becoming savvy and versed in all forms of digital communication. Next to cell phones, music and social networking platforms are one of radio's greatest competitors.
Why listen to the radio when you can hear all of the music you want commercial free, in the order you choose, when you choose all while you are on the computer or in the gym. You can find all of the new artists online or through underground podcasts. I guess Pandora doesn't do contests or pizza giveaways though... if that's what really keeps a person listening.
