Direct Marketing

I recieve a direct marketing catalog from Bass Pro Shop regularly. This catalog that I get don't help Bass Pro Shop out at all but it does help out Fleet Farm. When I get this catalog I see all of the fishing stuff that I want. After looking through it for awhile I usually head steight to Fleet Farm stocking up on fishing supplies.

I receive a direct marketing catalogs from Overtons on a regular basis. This catalog really stricks my intrests but I hardly ever order anything from here. I like to flip through the catalog and get ideas of boating stuff that I want; this place is way to over priced for me. After flipping through here for a while I start to shop around for these products online at other stores for a cheaper price, that is usually pretty easy to find.

This is also some direct mail that I get regularly that goes directly in the garbage. I have my cell phone and home internet throught the same company. The internet offers me web sites that have TV shows on them so I have no need to spend the extra money on cable TV. Also I don't watch enough TV to pay the high price of cable.

Sales Promotional Items

Promotional sales are a very cost efficient and great ways to advertise. Since the creation of the Internet advertisers are having to come up with new and creative ways to get their products out. “2008 survey, done by the Advertising Specialties Institute (ASI), revealed that advertising specialties, also known as promotional products beat out all forms of TV, radio and print advertising as the most cost effective advertising medium available” says articlebase.com.

501 Martini Lounge and Fine Dinning found it beneficial to hand out baseball caps with their name and logo on it. Customers and employees were given these hats to wear when out on the town. I think these are good for building customer association, letting people know that this person thinks it a good place to go maybe I should check it out too.

Mid State Technical College (MSTC) puts their name on key chains. By doing this people show the name of MSTC by not even really meaning to. Users like these to make it easier to keep their keys more organized. When they are with friends and use their keys the surrounding people will notice this.

The MSTC college cafeteria thinks that it is beneficial for the students to have a meal deal card. They know that most students are hard up for cash so they offer them buy nine grilled sandwich combo deals and get the tenth free.

By businesses using these inexpensive promotional items they are showing their customers that they are concerned about them. These save the customers money, help them stay organized and give them fashionable clothing to wear. What more could a customer look for in a business?

Outdoor Advertising

Over the past two decades outdoor advertising has been becoming more popular. "The Florida outdoor advertising industry revenues have increased significantly over the past two decades with revenues of $298 million expected for 2002 with 9% growth through 2005 and forecast revenues of $324 million," says The Economic Impact of Florida’s Outdoor Advertising Industry From a Pre- and Post- September 11, 2001 Perspective. I believe this has a lot to due with outdoor advertising's creative ability, the internet, mp3s and low costs.

The creative ability of outdoor advertising is wide and varied. This advertising can be done on water towers, billboards, in the air, behind vehicles and countless ways; it is even starting to be put on space shuttles.

The internet is making advertisers think outside of the box. With internet T.V really starting to become more popular, people have the option of watching their favorite shows without commercials. With this option becoming more readily available advertisers are starting to rely more on outdoor advertising rather than traditional strategy.

As mp3s become more popular people are starting to not listen to the radio as much anymore. Mp3 players and the capability of fitting almost 200 songs on one CD makes it easier for music listeners to avoid radio stations altogether. Outdoor advertising is still visible when people are in their vehicles driving down the road listening to their mp3s.

Most of these ads are very cost effective because of they are visible to any passerby at any time of day. The initial cost of some outdoor advertising may seem very expensive. Once the cost is broken down to how many times it is viewed and for how long it is ran, however, it is very cost efficient.Fore example, the Good Year blimp flies over Lambeau Stadium during the Packers vs Vikings game. Lambeau field is at maximum capacity with 72,928 people and another 2 million viewers watch the game on T.V. That is approximately 2,072,928 people viewing the Goodyear Blimp at one time. No other kind of advertising can have that many viewers at one time. The creative options are endless with outdoor advertising and the amount of viewers at one time can be phenomenal. When using a magazine for advertising, ads are only seen when the magazine is open directly to that page and are visible to, at most, two or three viewers.

Given all of the creative abilities and cost effective strategies, advertisers are starting to turn more to outdoor advertising. Outdoor ads are beginning to have some obstacles with new laws regarding the obstruction of natural beauty. But as of now, it is a new and potentially cost-effective and successful way to advertise.

Magazine/Newspaper

The target market that I am writing about is middle-aged and energetic businessmen. A newspaper or magazine can cost effectively reach this target market by making their lead stories related to health and fitness and financial topics. These articles can be news, sports, vacation spots, business tips or nutrition.

One magazine that I think does a really good job with this is Men's Health http://www.menshealth.com/. On the front cover of this magazine they always have something about nutrition, fitness or relationships trying to find new activities to keep your relationship, fitness and diet healthy. Men's Health does this with articles like "Chisel your six pack for Spring," "5 foods to keep you healthy" and "Reignite the heat and passion in your love life."

The Wall Street Journal http://online.wsj.com/home-page I think is a good newspaper for this target market, too. This newspaper is very well written and the writing seems to flow. They also have topics that would relate very well to this group like tech, life and style, and personal finance. The Wall Street Journal includes articles such as "Motorola to Add Bing on Phones," and "Peak Performance and Where to Find the Money." I think many people don't realize all of the information this newspaper has to offer, so it is often overlooked.

How Various New Digital Technolgies are Impacting Radio Listening

New technologies are impacting the way people listen to the radio. Mp3s and internet radio are the main sources that have impacted the way people listen to the radio. These two technologies have put the listen of exatly what you want to hear at your finger tips.

Thanks to the innovation of Mp3s people can take almost anything they want to listen to and convert it into a Mp3 file. After converting it to a mp3 they can then download it onto their Mp3 player and take it anywhere. With mp3 players people can put a days worth of music, or whatever they want to listen to, onto their mp3 player and avoid annoying commerical and djs talking.

Internet radio has also changed the way people listen to the radio. The internet opens the listener up to thousands of different radio stations. The listener doesn't have to listen to the five stations their radio gets; all basicly the same with only a little varioation. This person can now go onto the internet and choose from stations all around the world. Giving this person exactly what they want to listen to.

The internet radio station that I chose was http://www.pandora.com/#/stations/create/. The reason why I chose this station is that I use this radio station almost everyday. About every 20-25 minutes they play a 30 second commercial. This radio station is exactly what I want to hear, I chose the bands that I want to be played. If I don't like the song that is playing I can click thumbs down and I will never hear the song again; if I'm not in the mood for the song I can click next. The down fall to skipping songs is that i only get to skip 5-7 songs and hour.

The Value of a Television Advertisement During the Super Bowl

The value of advertising during the Super Bowl is more then just advertising, it is also about businesses' social status. Advertising during the super bowl has become the who's who of advertising, it is very expensive, not just any company can afford advertising during this game. This is the high rollers of their market (Gillette, Budweiser, Frito lay).

These companies get a great return out of their ads. The super bowl has grown to be the eighth largest shopping day of the year. Also some people only watch this game just for the commercials.

This is the top watched "Mans Show" almost every commercial is directed towards men by men drinking beer, men in weight rooms, men working on cars or men bonding over a product. Here is a prime example:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8qIkou5oNXo

This is two men (man and child) bonding in a sense. The child is setting the rules for the man letting him know to respect his Mom and chips.

Environmental Influences on Consumer Behavior

Culture
Culture has many influences why a consumer consumes what they do. People that were raised in a culture that is in a Mediterranean region will have different eating habits then someone that is raised in a Northern region. People that were raised in the Mediterranean region will eat spicier foods to help themselves sweat to keep cool. Where someone living in the Northern regions will eat heartier foods that stick to their ribs to help keep them feeling full and warm.

Subculture
Subcultures will have an impact on it's surrounding cultures. Since a subculture is inside another culture these cultures will be running into each other; walking by each other on the street, or driving by the subculture seeing the stores and restaurants that they have to offer. A good example of this is The United States. The U.S has many subcultures all of these subcultures are slowly starting to blend into one culture. When Mexicans started to migrate into the U.S they had their food. Americans started to eat it and enjoy it. Then American restaurants started to adapt Mexican food into their menus giving it a little twist of the American culture.

Social Class
Social classes have a large influence on what a person consumes. In America social classes are mainly separated by money; the more money a person has the higher the social class. With social classes it is not easy to bounce back and forth or be in a couple different ones at the same time. If a person is in a higher social class they are influenced by their clothes, jewelery, cars and houses. If a person is living in a higher class purchases a new luxury car (BMW, Lexus) then another person has to buy a luxury car to stay at the same level. Were lower classes can't always afford the more expense luxuries in life so they stay down at a different level and buy a car just to get back and forth from work.

Reference groups
Reference groups have a large influence on what a consumer consumes. A reference group advises a person on what to purchase. If someone has a question on what to purchase and they call a reference group to get advise on it there is a very good chance they will purchase it. If a person looks at a "Green" group for advice on purchasing a new car this group is going to advise them to purchase a car that gets high mpg, burns alternative fuels and has low emissions. But if this same person asked a horsepower group on what car to purchase they are going to say something with high horsepwer, low mpg and has high emissions.

Situational Determinants
Situational determinants will have a large influence on what a consumer consumes. These will put a factor on someone not being able to purchase their usual product ( weather, money,or transportation, etc.). If a person typically purchases fresh organic vegetables from Central Wisconsin and a storm goes through the farm destroying the farmer's crops this consumer will have to purchase else where. Forcing the consumer to try different farmer's vegetables possible making them switch who they purchase from.
