Outdoor Advertising

Over the past two decades outdoor advertising has been becoming more popular. "The Florida outdoor advertising industry revenues have increased significantly over the past two decades with revenues of $298 million expected for 2002 with 9% growth through 2005 and forecast revenues of $324 million," says The Economic Impact of Florida’s Outdoor Advertising Industry From a Pre- and Post- September 11, 2001 Perspective. I believe this has a lot to due with outdoor advertising's creative ability, the internet, mp3s and low costs.

The creative ability of outdoor advertising is wide and varied. This advertising can be done on water towers, billboards, in the air, behind vehicles and countless ways; it is even starting to be put on space shuttles.

The internet is making advertisers think outside of the box. With internet T.V really starting to become more popular, people have the option of watching their favorite shows without commercials. With this option becoming more readily available advertisers are starting to rely more on outdoor advertising rather than traditional strategy.

As mp3s become more popular people are starting to not listen to the radio as much anymore. Mp3 players and the capability of fitting almost 200 songs on one CD makes it easier for music listeners to avoid radio stations altogether. Outdoor advertising is still visible when people are in their vehicles driving down the road listening to their mp3s.

Most of these ads are very cost effective because of they are visible to any passerby at any time of day. The initial cost of some outdoor advertising may seem very expensive. Once the cost is broken down to how many times it is viewed and for how long it is ran, however, it is very cost efficient.Fore example, the Good Year blimp flies over Lambeau Stadium during the Packers vs Vikings game. Lambeau field is at maximum capacity with 72,928 people and another 2 million viewers watch the game on T.V. That is approximately 2,072,928 people viewing the Goodyear Blimp at one time. No other kind of advertising can have that many viewers at one time. The creative options are endless with outdoor advertising and the amount of viewers at one time can be phenomenal. When using a magazine for advertising, ads are only seen when the magazine is open directly to that page and are visible to, at most, two or three viewers.

Given all of the creative abilities and cost effective strategies, advertisers are starting to turn more to outdoor advertising. Outdoor ads are beginning to have some obstacles with new laws regarding the obstruction of natural beauty. But as of now, it is a new and potentially cost-effective and successful way to advertise.
